Fooling Around

I am having a play date with myself today.
I have a to do list as long as my arm
but instead I am doing this...

I copied this awesome photo of our little grand boys,
Spencer (right) and Ross (left)
Romping through a Tuscan Vineyard and
made a little vignette for our kitchen counter...

Double click to see a close-up of the frame. ♥ it!
(OK back to my to do list!)

Striking Out!

Yesterday I wrote on how to put ♥s in your blog post. Marie said she'd really like to know how to do strike outs too. I don't know much about html but I do know how to do strike outs so thought I'd share for all of you. (Sal, check comments on yesterday's post about changing the colors.)

Strike outs are used to clarify, cover-up, emphasize, reveal your true thoughts in clever ways on blogs. I'm just mentioning this because one time I did one and was asked why I did it. Anyway, here are a couple of examples.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is drop dead gorgeous an accomplished actor whom I couldn't take my eyes off of enjoyed very much in the movie, PS I Love You.

Little Johnny was a total brat a bit of a behavioral concern in the grocery store while his mother totally ignored it tried in vain to take care of it.

So this is how you do it. First write your sentence including what you want to strike out and what you want to replace it with. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is drop dead gorgeous an accomplished actor whom I couldn't take my eyes off of enjoyed very much in the movie PS I Love You.

Look at the top right hand corner of the composition or text box for the edit html tab and click on it. Then find your sentence in the mix of words and codes: Place your cursor in front of the first word you want to strike out and add in the following...

To edit Html you put your code inside a left and right carrot < > so in that space you write strike To end your strike out, place the cursor right after the last word you are striking and you write /strike between a left and right carrot < > Then go back and click on the compose tab on the upper right hand side of the text box and check it out.

That is it, it is so simple! And I bet you will not soon forget that:
I think that he is a total hottie Jeffrey Dean Morgan is amazing on the silver screen even though I am old enough to be his mother a tad bit older than he is.

How to Make Hearts in Your Blog Text

My friend Traci recently taught me how to make ♥s in my blog posts and in comments to others. I ♥ them and wanted to show you how to do it. This is the html code for them and you enter it all as one word with no spaces, but so I can show you how ~ you will see spaces between the characters.

& h e a r t s ; You type it like that where you want your heart to go..remembering not to put in the spaces. When you publish your post or comment, up pops a ♥ in place of the code. You can also use it on Facebook. You can change the color of your ♥ or the size of your ♥ ♥s but you cannot bold them. Bold undoes the magic somehow. If you try Italics you just get this ♥.

Anyway, I think the ♥s are very fun and cute and different and simple. If you agree~have at it!

Oh and by the way...I ♥ you! Bon

So, For Today...Monday, July August 10, 2009

Outside my window...it is clearly daylight as I am getting a later than usual start this morning. The birds are singing in full chorus and a little plane is flying overhead already. Jim told me it is supposed to be 104 here today so I am letting all the cool night air in now and will close up the house soon to keep it as cool as possible.

I am thinking...that the summer has flown by and it has not been as kick back and carefree as I always think it will be. Are the lazy, crazy days of summer a myth? If so, I like it as it always makes me look forward to it in spite of the realities.

From the learning room...I am learning that there is always learning going on in our lives and that we should never stop looking for ways to become a better, more refined and educated person. I love how when I learn about something new it is suddenly all around me and I wonder why I never noticed it before. Just like believing is seeing...learning is also seeing.

From the kitchen...we will be eating a lot of leftovers this week. After working at the church conference for young adults this past weekend we came home with lots of Mexican food that was extra.

I am wondering...what tasks I will do today after my group of friends leaves around 9:30. I usually have a plan but this weekend was so busy I have barely had time to think minute to minute.

I am wearing...a blue nightgown. Time to rush and get dressed before my friends arrive.

I am reading...The Continuous Atonement by Brad Wilcox and a few other books.... still.

I am creating...nothing at the moment. Just blog posts, I guess. I did three yesterday!

I am praying for...the Lord to touch the life of someone very important to me that seems to be having a spiritual awaking of late.

I am hearing....Kenny Rogers version of My Funny Valentine. I like it. One of my favorite songs. Our neighbor's new puppy is barking and a car is driving by.

I am going...to get my 5,000 iPhotos organized!

I am quoting... C.S. Lewis, " I believe in Christ as I believe in the rising sun--not because I can see it, but because by it I can see everything else."

My spiritual thoughts include...total gratitude for all of my blessings.

Around the house...I am getting everything done early so I can lounge around when it gets blistering hot this afternoon! We are getting our window delivery this Thursday! Yay! Cannot wait until they are all installed so we can have the double panes and can get the house painted. The new windows that we do have in already have kept the house a lot cooler this summer.

Today I miss..the energy of my youth.

I am hoping...you all have a great day!

I have been procrastinating...
letters I need to write still are waiting. I am terrible about this!

One of my favorite things...the desk fan I use in the summer. I love to have the breeze when it is warm.

A few plans for the rest of the week..three of my sweet friends are having birthdays this week. I am taking two of them to breakfast and I wish I could take the other one who lives in Kent, England. We have a wedding to attend on Saturday and I think we are having a BBQ here for a few couples from our old ward on Sunday afternoon. There is always something to keep me busy in the errand and work departments!

Here are 2 pictures and a thought I am sharing with you...

This is our daughter's husband, Robert receiving his promotion to Lt. Commander in the US Navy. We are so proud of him and his many accomplishments in his life. He is so honorable and pure in heart, we love our son, Robert so much.

I love the picture below because it is so indicative of how
behind many successful men is a loving and fully supportive
family cheering them on and on and on!

us if you are so inclined

Now This is SWEET!

Imagine my surprise today when I received an e-mail advertising Room With A Past's upcoming sale. I blogged about them once before. Each month they send out this e-mail and then they attach some pertinent info.

Apparently they have started a blog themselves. I was reading the second entry on the page and found this post featuring my blog! Whoa, such great advertising for me here in our local area. I love this place, these sweet ladies, and the blogsphere! Such kindnesses as sharing information in our areas of interest and business is simply SWEET! I cannot wait to hop on over there this weekend for their sale. It is a real treasure hunt every time!

If you live locally~

1700 For Lunch and Dinner

Saturday was amazing in so many ways. Amazing Young Single Adult Conference, amazing amount of work, amazing energy, amazingly tiring and amazingly sore feet. The church put on a state wide conference for people ages 18 to 31 on Saturday in several venues. Ours was held in Oakland at Temple Hill and was attended by undermined numbers, but guesstimated at over 1700.

Some of "our" girls!
Felicia, Angie, Suzy and Kari

The organization was amazing also. We arrived at about 8:45 in the morning and the parking lots were already crammed..I cannot even fathom where everyone parked but when there is a will ...there is a way. There were a whole group of guys that manned the parking lots for hours on end. Our group was asked to help in the kitchen. Fortunately the majority of the food was take-out Pizza and Mexican food for yesterday. We started preparing all the things for the salads to accompany the pizza.

While the conference attendees did this...we did this...

Bishop Shepperd, Jim and Jay

One of many many gianormous bowls of tomatoes.
All sorted and picked through and washed for quality control.

Some of the many pizzas we had

We had 300 extra large pizzas delivered from 3 different pizza parlors. They brought 4 different kinds at three different times to keep them as hot as possible for the two lunch breaks. There was no way that all the participants could eat at the same time. We had over 7000 bottles of water for the 2-day conference and dozens of cookies and cakes as well.

My job was manning one of the cookies and water tables. We wanted to make sure there were enough cookies for both lunch times and so I must have said "1 cookie ~ 1 water" about a million times. We needed a sign for that!

Just before they came in~Julie and others
do last minute prep before the onslaught.

Here they come! Good thing we had so many
helping serve
and do crowd control, which was
the duty Jim pulled for this time of the day.

Eating all over the place inside and out!
But mostly inside for lunch so as not to interfere
with the 17 weddings occurring at the Temple
yesterday morning and early afternoon.

So after the clean-up we all got to rest for a bit and then we had the dinner to think about. A Mexican place brought in dinner for 2200 the actual number they thought were coming. Even though they cooked, there was still plenty to do! You have never seen so many tortillas, chips, or so much salsa and dips, rice, beans, meat and lettuce and tomatoes in your whole life...I promise. The Smiths who put everything in place to feed these kids were amazing! We got to see so many of our beloved young singles! It was great.

I have to say that after this second go-around I became pretty useless, but the ones with more stamina like Jim, the Smiths, the Shepperds and a few others partied on trying to prepare for the Sunday crew after the dinner clean-up, which was horrendous! After nearly collapsing from the fatigue of this day's worth of meals, Jim, Mike, Bishop Sheppard along with Roger and Shelba and Vicky and Steve and Julie baked 1400 pounds, or 2800 potatoes (that had been cut in half and wrapped in foil in the days prior by some of the YSAs in Walnut Creek 3rd wards, thank heavens) Carol and I cleaned lots of oven racks when all four of the convection ovens were a total mess from the potatoes oozing fluid because they had been cut in half. Hello!

During the baking time, Jim and the crew were able to bake 500 potatoes at one time between the four huge convection ovens. We finished around 11:00 pm and got home at midnight.

I saw one guy, President Evans, carrying and emptying garbage bags for 14 hours straight in his suit, white shirt and tie. I could not believe it! There was so much trash and so much recycling to contend with it was overwhelming! This is one thing we love about our church...everyone contributes, everyone works hard and it works! Fancy that!

I think we were all beyond exhausted from the standing and working all day long. Everyone that helped was amazing and there were far more helpers than the few I have mentioned. Made doing a wedding seem like child's play. We could pull that off with ease any time after this. Utterly exhausting comes to mind repeatedly. The Lord just gives you that extra strength you need to get through it when you are serving His Young Adults! Some people were back bright and early today like Mike, Roger and Shelba, the Smiths and the Shepperds. They are amazing each and every one of them.

The very edge of the immense dance floor
where spirits are high from a great day for them!

The kids were still dancing and having a ball when we pulled out. I wish they could have thrown a little of that energy and stamina in my direction on the way out the door. Jim was amazing in his ability to work work work. Me...not so much after the first ten hours.

It was fun working together with each other and so many wonderful friends and even though we had to pay $20.00 for our meals...we came home with enough Mexican food to feed a small army and only a couple of aching backs and some sore feet and happy hearts. It all works out in the wash! Whatever you give, you get back tenfold, even though that is not why you do it! What a blessing to be included!

The Conference was a huge success!
Lots of Facebook postivity today!

Party at the Paramount Theatre

Friday night is usually our date night. But this week Jim was sweet and didn't mind that I went with three friends to the Paramount theater. We went to dinner at a cute little place called The Crepevine. Excellent!

We saw an old movie from 1939 called The Women. It is full of vintage Hollywood bombshells and not a single male graced the screen! It was far more interesting than Lawrence of Arabia that had men only. The only thing that kept me awake in that one was the cute guy sitting next to me on my first fancy movie date! But that is a totally different movie story for another time! The newsreel from the mid 60's and the Warren Brothers cartoon were pretty interesting Friday night. It was truly a different world in those days.

Oakland's Paramount Theatre is one of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design in the United States. It was completed in late 1931. After its initial brief blaze of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, this remarkable auditorium suffered three decades of neglect and decline until its rescue by the Oakland Symphony, the City of Oakland and numerous private donors. A painstaking and authentic restoration was completed in 1973 .

The Paramount Theatre became a California Registered Historic Landmark in 1976, and on May 5, 1977, was declared a National Historic Landmark.

Restored to its original splendor, meticulously maintained, and fully upgraded to modern technical standards, the Paramount now serves all the arts. The Paramount Theatre is the home of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and, as one of the San Francisco Bay Area's premiere performing arts facilities, hosts a year-round schedule of popular music concerts, variety shows, theatre, and - of course - movies.

It is beautiful building but I do wonder what
the designer was "on" when they chose this
carpet and upholstery fabric. Sometimes I think
they pick something outlandish and call it 'designer' just
to be funny and see if people fall for it??
Not buyin' it here!

Can you say...Art Deco? This place is dripping in
ornate pattern and glitz. It is delicious to the eye
albeit a little over the top.
At least they didn't have to worry about
hanging art pieces ~not a single spot
for your eye to rest in the entire place.

"Less is more" is definitely not a theme here!

Before the movie the organ is played and
it is really fun and nostalgic.

They also have some big wheel spins with
free raffle tickets with
dinner for 2 from local
dining establishments as prizes.

The Lobby sans the huge crowd that was there.

A great time was had by all. It is so wonderful
to be out with friends doing fun things. We are
so blessed to live in a place that is so
culturally rich at every turn.
