Party, Live and Learn Vacation

Marriott Center~BYU

A few weeks ago we went to Utah for what is known in our Church as Education Week.  I spoke about it briefly in my last Daybook entry a week or so back.  This is held every year between summer and fall semester at BYU in Provo, Utah.  It runs from Monday to Friday for that one week.  When our kids were teens we had a long standing tradition of going back and letting them have a feel for what college might be like at BYU.

There they hold lots of wonderful youth classes on the Savior, dating, music, etc.  All the classes are geared to uplift the kids and helping them make wise decisions in those most crucial years between 14 and 24.  And they also have many classes for adults.  Over 1,000 classes offered in all, with classes running all day from 8:30 am to 9:00 at night.  They also have a variety of plays and concerts in the evening that are delightful if you are not too exhausted from the day.  We did attend the Scarlet Pimpernel production one evening with Robert, Ross, Spencer and Laura.  It was pretty fun.

Most members of our church pay tithing, ten percent of our increase to the church.  This maintains and pays for all of our chapels and temples, and many other programs of the church including a substantial amount to our church universities to help families better afford a top rated, wonderful and more reasonably priced education for their children.  We also fund a perpetual education fund to help young people in struggling nations attend colleges and universities in their nations and to receive vocational training in many aspects of life that they might better support their families later.  The monies also support our humanitarian aid all over the world to people and places when disaster hits.  There is more, much more but you get the idea.

Education Week is very reasonably priced to attend so I would imagine the price we pay only covers a portion of the cost to the University.  There are usually about 30,000 attendees.  It is one of those deals where a lot of the locals hide out at home until the throng of visitors goes away at the end of the week.  Can't blame them...just the traffic alone is overwhelming.

One night we thought we'd go here!
Mistake, there must have been 100 Ed. Week
Attendees in front of us in line.

Anyway, Education Week this year was special for our family because Spencer got to go all week and Piper accompanied him on Monday and Tuesday.  Her time was cut short as she started high school on Wednesday so it was a pretty exciting week for her all the way around.  It was fun having part of three generations there attending classes.

A class by Randal Wright that Carol and I
 attended on Happy Families.

I have been attending Randal's classes over many years.  He is like an old friend. This is the immense Ballroom at BYU and holds about 800 seats for Ed Week participants.  (Best part~being with Carol!)
And that is saying a lot as the class was excellent!  But there is nothing quite like being with a wonderful friend doing something so uplifting.  I wish you all could know her like I do.

Richard Eyre~another excellent and
long time friend and teacher at Ed Week.
Love this man for his wisdom and faith.
Jim and I and Carol and Laura attended his classes.

The teen kids had so much fun being set free all day to attend classes they chose in a wholesome and safe environment.  Robert was out in Utah at the same time taking a class for his work and so all of them came out.  Kids under 14 are not permitted to attend so Ross spent time with Aunt Jen, Aunt Missy and Robert's parents so we could do this.  We could not have done it without all their help.   Jim and I and Laura and Spencer stayed in the college dorms as I had also previously mentioned.  Spence loved that!

Spencer and Piper having a ball?

At 14 it must be irrevocably decreed that when your mother is taking the photo you are not allowed to smile and act like you are having fun.  But if it is someone else it is OK?   Spencer did have a great time, I promise you because I witnessed it!  And he confessed to it when no cameras or recorders were visible from his vantage point.  Sheesh!

So even though it was not our official year for our family reunion it turned out to be a mini one anyway.  Anytime we are all in one place we call it that anyway.  Some of the family had not seen Robert since August of 2011 before he deployed to the middle east.

The first Sunday we were there after church in the late afternoon we went up to Mt. Nebo and had a BBQ with Jen and Laura's family at a camp grounds near Payson Lakes.  Talk about gorgeous.  It is about 7000 feet in elevation and the forest is just remarkable the air is fresh and the view spectacular.

 for S'Mores after dinner!

Sadly Chris and family could not be there but we had a great time with them the next weekend at a BBQ they held in their beautiful backyard.

It was just a great week with the family and with our friends the Holladays.  It completely wore both Jim and me out but we loved it.  All the walking and the altitude takes its toll on this old lady as you know. I'll be fully recovered about the time I go back next Saturday.

Jim took a day and spent it with Ross (because all the other kids had started school) and they rode their bikes for 20 miles.  He is one amazingly physical person.  All that and needing a hip replacement in a couple of months.  He claims though that riding does not hurt his hip at all.  So good deal.  Ross says his Grampa wore him out.  I could only smile and nod and think I get it one hundred percent!  Been there, done that with Grampa!  He was also able to squeeze another trip in with Spencer on the Saturday before we left.

Good job Rossie!

A rest along the way~20 miles is not easy!

Alpine Coaster at Park City

They went to Park City for this particular ride which was extremely fast and fun.  3 hours in the car for a 180 second thrill.  But Jim's says the driving conversations were robust though.   One topic...How Life is Like a Chess Game!  That is Ross in a nutshell.

Spencer ventures back onto a bike.

He did great but his leg was sore
for a few days, particularly his ankle.

It was Spencer's first time riding a bike since he broke his leg last spring.  That was one nasty break he is still wearing a brace on his leg.  That brace, by the way, is most intriguing to Hazel!  If she ever saw him without it she would admonish him to get it on!  So cute.

They stopped along the river at the big swing so
Spencer could rest and put on his brace for awhile.
 Hazie would be so proud!

We have learned one thing for sure...we need to travel less between May and September in the future.  Since that is basically the only time we usually travel...it means traveling less in any given year.  This whole year has been a big blur, if it wasn't for my occasionally blogging about what we do I would be hard pressed to recall it all.  Far too many days living out of a suitcase.  They were good days though, nonetheless.

The new North Heritage dorm
where we stayed ~ #25 on campus!

The Invention Prototype

The dorms are very new and very modern and extremely industrial to maintain their niceness as long as possible.  One things about Spencer is he is a born engineer.  He is always thinking of things that people need to improve their living environment or life style. He and Grampa had a little project going on the entire time we were there and this was what they invented for the showers in the dorm.  There is no place within the shower stall for a bar of soup.  So they got some PVC pipe and created this.  Actually it was quite awesome.  Now Spencer and Connor are thinking of marketing it at BYU for the students.  It will be very inexpensive and quite serviceable.  And the best part...a new crop of students every semester!  Sweet entrepreneurial opportunity for two young teens.   I am sure they won't have too much trouble finding a willing backer/investor.

We had to be out of the dorm by Saturday so Laura and her kids and Jim and I moved over to a Comfort Inn for a few nights which was barely a hiccup in our fun with family. That same day Jen had planned a surprise party for Julia, our granddaughter, who turned 13.  Funny she was surprised out of her mind considering she had been asking for a surprise party for three years.  Isn't that so cute?  It was special to have all her cousins from our side of the family and many friends too.  It was a bit crowded in the condo as it was threatening a big thunder storm that night.

Julia's Birthday table display.
This is kind of what I use to do for
our kids when they were growing up.
It is fun to see Jen has kept that
tradition from her youth.

The sky after it rained cats and dogs!

Finally we got a chance to go outside and have
cake and ice cream which helped keep
some semblance of order in the condo.

Jewels in the goofy glasses her
Mom bought her for the party!
It was "condo cozy" but very fun and everyone
was dancing and it was just perfect for her.
They are actively looking for a new house now.  Yay!
Space is the ultimate luxury Jim and I have discovered.

The Whole Bunch

For some odd reason when we all get together we usually do end up dancing at some point.  I am forbidden to publish those videos on punishment of death from Jennifer.  I believe her threats are real, but oh how I do want to!    The dancing is usually brought on by our hilarious daughter, Jennifer.  She can make our grandkids laugh like no body else.  She is usually doing some funny antics when we take their group pictures and it is the only way we can guarantee all of them laughing (not necessary in a synchronized way...note above) not just smiling to the clicking shutters.

We had fun with every one of our grandkids and you know what?  It had only been a few weeks since I had seen some of them and they still all seemed older and more mature for some reason.  Maybe a new school year??  Even Hazie seemed more grown up but then she did start kindergarten after all.  Can you believe she will be SIX on September 24th?  Me neither. Sigh...

My next post will be about some of our time with Chris' family and his new book and his award from President Samuelson at BYU the day before we left.

It's All About Family

The Y
It has been awhile since I have been able to attend classes at BYU. I had forgotten how much I love it here. I have always loved an academic environment and I enjoy taking classes and learning from the experts. This conference on Genealogy and Family History has been the best conference I have ever attended.

Here are some of the things I did this week:

1. I was able to spend time with both of Lowell's parents as they were at 'the crossroads of the west' here with me. They were just passing through so we shared bits and pieces of a few days together.

We do so love them! Had a nice Pioneer Day dinner with them here at Lowell and Jen's. Jennifer made homemade honey ice cream for the Beehive State and her Utah chocolate dipped shortbread cookies! Is she not the cutest? Next year she revealed it will be wagon wheel cookies and Rocky Road ice cream!

Weight Watchers...note this wonderful portion control!

2. Monday night we had Family Home Evening in the canyon not far from Sundance. We were to go for a "little walk" from Vivian Park to Bridal Veil Falls. It landed up helping me reach a goal of walking a 3.5k for Weight Watchers. Woohoo. As much as I love all aspects of nature and the beautiful creations of our Father in Heaven...I am not much of a sporty, outdoorsy kind of girl. Sad and shocking I know, but true. Poor Jim who is the total opposite. Well, I like it if it's no farther than about a mile or two from the car and there is no sweating involved.

Asphalt is kind of nice too if I get to choose!

Beautiful scenery and great company help too.

But, as lovely as it was...

My feet were killing me, I wish I could find the perfect pair walking shoes. When we started to notice that it was not only getting dark but about to rain I perked up and we walked a lot faster, just barely escaping two blisters. We got pretty wet that night. Ever try to cram 6 wet people and a dog in a sedan? Fun! This may come as a big surprise to you but, we are not small people. LOL! We took two cars and left one at each end of the river walk, thank heavens. We had to all cram in the car at Bridal Veil as there was no shelter to wait under while the other car was retrieved.

3. I got to meet a really wonderful cyber friend/cousin (hopefully 97% sure) in person and it was a joyous experience. He is so nice as well as brilliant... and we got to have lunch together on Tuesday between the classes he was teaching at the conference. I got be go into the faculty lunch room! For a genealogist a bit like going backstage at a great concert, don't ya think?

Steve
We have been corresponding for several months on Jim's Italian line. Steve has been more than generous in sharing his research findings with us and it was so nice to be able put a face and some time and a hug into the equation.

4. I got to spend time with Chris and Missy's family during the conference in the evenings and we had a great time. Chris walked me to class each morning and home again in the evenings. Got totally drenched getting home on Tuesday night. It was raining so Missy came to get us. Then Chris ran down to get in the driver's seat and drove up the super wide sidewalk practically to the door. In spite of having to walk only a few feet to the car I was totally soaked to the bone. It was like standing under a fire hose. Haven't seen rain like that since Mississippi.

5. Every day at the conference was just outstanding! One day Piper came to have lunch with me and that was really neat. It may be the first time she and I have had lunch alone. We giggled and chatted for an hour and a half. We sat outside under the pavilion of the Conference Center and it was so great. I loved that.

Pipey! She is such a doll.

6. Jim and I texted a lot and that made it a lot nicer being apart. He had a very busy week as did I, but it was fun to almost be side by side with this great technology. I am happy to be getting back home to him tonight.

7. I took Chris and family out to dinner on Thursday night and Jen and family out last night. Both nights were a lot of fun. We have found it is just too many people to be able to talk to anyone with all of us in a restaurant at one time. Can you say...b e d l a m? It is the very least I could do for them, they are so sweet to me.

8. I have been pretty tired every night due the intense, technical aspects of the classes and all I was trying to "capture" (new genealogy buzz word for me.) But I was treated to a foot message most nights while I was here at Jen's by Julia. Last night for a few minutes, Chloe and Hazie got into the act.

Chloe said, "Gramma, why do your feet
have crinkles on the bottom?"

I wish I knew?
That is one place I had forgotten to look for them!

They are having quite the discussion over it. Aren't kids the cutest things on the planet? You always know where you stand (and in this case what you stand on) where they are concerned.

9. This morning we got up early and went out to yard sales for awhile and to breakfast, the Farmers' Market and back to the mall so I could use my 2nd Birthday gift card at my favorite store. Woohoo! Thanks, Kids!

10. I had a pretty powerful experience with genealogy this week and I feel it really pointed me in a new direction in my life. I saw things that I need and want and am supposed to be doing! So the week has brought much joy and happiness and redirection. There were also lots of hugs and kisses from the grandies and face to face time with the kids and our friend/cousin, Stephen. What a blessing. The only thing missing was Grampa and I am about to fix that, so life is good! It's all good.

I will be glad to get home and see him and hear all about the huge renovation they will have completed by this coming Monday in the Temple. I am so proud of him, he has been putting in countless service hours to complete the project in just three weeks. My plane leaves in a few hours! Home is sounding good. I need a rest but actually it is not very likely!

I have missed blogging this week but just do not know how I could have squeezed it in. Missed you all and hope you are well. Love, ;-B

Gone Fishin'...

Well, not really fishin' but I am playing hooky from my real life over here in Utah again. This time I am fishing for new generations in our family tree and knowledge about Genealogy...in a sense I guess it is learning to be a better 'fisher of men.'

I arrived safely yesterday afternoon after a really pleasant flight where I met two really nice ladies. We chatted the whole way here, which I don't usually like to do, but these ladies were a lot of fun. I ran into another lady I knew that was also coming up for the Family History Conference. It is a small world between Oakland International Airport and Salt Lake City, we almost always see someone we know on our flight.

The Conference starts on Tuesday and runs through Friday so there are a couple of days to just relax and hang out here at Jen's. One of the instructors is an online genealogy friend and possible relative of Jim's going back to the old country. Stephen has helped us so much on Jim's Italian line from Tasso. So I really am looking forward to meeting him in person this week. He also helped us quite a bit in finding the baby's grave in San Francisco that I wrote about a few months ago. I am in awe of his brilliance so look forward to gleaning all I can from his classes.

Tuesday night I will move over to Chris and Missy's to spend some time with them and Connor, Aynslee, Zach and Owen and I can also walk to the Conference Center from their house so do not have to be such a pest needing rides.

Chloe Jane

In the meantime I get to play with Chloe and Hazie, Julia and Piper. Isn't this about the cutest little fisher woman you ever did see?

Piper Takes The Gold

Piper's Graduation from 6th Grade!

The last day of elementary school!
Piper (left) with her teacher Mrs. I

and her best friend since pre-school, Mitrian.
Middle School, here they come!

Piper last summer

Be forewarned this is a post written by a bragging set of grandparents!!

Our Piper received the Presidential Gold Award for Academic Excellence upon her sixth grade graduation. Only 7 students in her school achieved this award. Can you say proud parents and grandparents? The following criteria is from the Internet regarding this award.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

I removed her last name and school for security
note...signed by President Obama

The purpose of this award is to recognize academic success in the class room. To be eligible for the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, students must meet the following requirements: (Gold Medal)

1. Grade Point Average:
Students are to earn an A or A- average
starting in fourth gr
ade.

2. Standardized Achievement Test:
Achieve in the 85th percentile or higher
in math OR reading, starting in

fourth grade.

3. Conduct Grade:
Students are to earn an A average
in conduct starting in fourth grade.

Piper in 4th grade
3 years is a long time to work towards something!
Congratulations, Piper!

Piper also achieved this great award from her school.

Her mom wrote, "This is the group of kids that earned the Satch Patch. It's a citizenship award the kids can earn over 4 years for academics, extra circulars, service, citizenship and behavior. Only a handful of kids get it because it takes four years: 3rd-6th grades. It's a big honor for these guys. They work hard for it."

4 years is even longer to work on an award!
Great kids aren't they?

Piper's Terracotta Warrior

Each member of her class sculpted one! We have some replicas of some of the real ones that Jim brought back from China a few years ago and this one she did is excellent! Good job, Pipey!

Annual Art Contest

This painting is done on a very large canvas,
(we happened to be there when she was working on it.)

She got first place in her age group for the art contest this year with the above picture she painted. She also got 1st place in 6th grade for the Writers Olympics this year for a spooky story she wrote.

This is her Faith In God Award

She got this award from church after doing all her
requirements and attending Primary for nine years.
Now she is in the Young Women's Program of the Church.

Piper, this has been a staggering year of achievement for you. You are an amazingly talented young woman and this note from your mom teaches a great lesson. She is a very wise mother, as you well know!

Jen wrote, along with sending all these great photos...

"Just for an added bit of humility, she did try for and do a lot of things this year that she wasn't #1 at, here are a few: lead roll in the class play, science fair, 7th grade application to student council, the track meet, etc. I told her if she participated in a lot of things she would really shine in some and just have a good experience in others and she has been pretty good about that."

Piper, the winning is not the important thing, it is the trying! As your mom has said, if you try a lot of things you will excel in some and just have fun in the others. The important thing is not being afraid to try. This is how you will discover your talents, perfect them and bless others with them. For after all isn't that why God gives each of us some talents? We are to bless the lives of His other children with them. You do a fine job of that.

Another important thing is being a humble and gracious winner and a gracious and happy person when someone else gets first place as well.
We also see these good qualities in you. We love you, Honey! Three cheers for you! Watch out Middle School, here she comes!

All these areas where you have been honored are just wonderful. We are very pleased in the young woman you are. However, if you never won a thing we would love you just as much. Because grandparents love their grandkids completely, just the way they are!
