San Francisco's Iconic Sight

The Golden Gate Bridge Heading North

We've all probably seen hundred of pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge in our day.  I took this one the other day and it occurred to me that there are not a lot of photos like this.  We get a lot of views of the bridge but you have to be on it to see this.  Have I mentioned lately that I adore photography and capturing the feeling of being there?  It's just different than seeing it from a side angle from off in the distance.

The funny thing I read about photography the other day that seems so true was, "Your very best camera is the the one you have with you!"  This is so true.  You can have a fancy camera but if it is in the camera bag at home or you just don't feel like lugging it around all the time, it is not your best camera.  I love the iPhone photos for handy!  And some of them can be really good.  It just takes practice and having it at the ready.

Decorator Showcase 2011

This is an artist's depiction of the San Francisco Decorator's Showcase. It is located at 2950 Vallejo Street. This home is in the Pacific Heights District, a very exclusive part of The City. Normally this real estate is untouchable and is usually kept in families for generations. But when a home is selected for the Showcase it is in transition. In other words, unoccupied. In this particular case the home was inherited by the adult children of the deceased, and they are trying to decide if they will keep or sell the family home.

Each year designers from various firms decorate a home and then open it to the public as a fundraiser for a private high school. Usually the homes being showcased are for sale. So the designer showcase is like a starting point for updating and then essentially it is staged as if it were being put on the market. It gets lots of press and exposure and it gives the various design firms an opportunity to showcase their skills and the latest trends in design. Each designer or group of designers is given a room to do, so it is unlike staging for sale in a lot of ways.

In staging you really work on how the house flows and coordinates; not so much in a showcased home. I was not sure what degree of coordination there was as every room truly is different. I did speak to one designer who had worked on several and he thought this one tied together better than most. We'll let you decide.

A couple shots of the front of the house. It is a grand Italian villa and was built in 1927. It has not been updated since the 70's. The detailing is beautiful and the grill work on the windows and doors is quite ornate. The impeccable landscaping, the brick facade and everything about it lends to its instant curb appeal.

The heir, James Tarentino, a designer himself, said that once his parents were both gone, the home had a sad energy about it and he felt this showcase would be a fabulous opportunity to give it a rebirth. The owner pays for all the permanent changes like the kitchen remodel and bath renovations. The exceptions would be if a particular designer may want something in their area that is desirable but not essential. As an example, the man who did a "Cookbook Nook" off the kitchen had some built in bookcases done at his own expense. Then the various companies bring in all the decor after painting, papering or whatever else they do to the walls and floors. This particular showcase paid a lot of attention to the ceilings. There were some beautiful ones.

They will not let you photograph inside claiming "intellectual properties" as the reason so if you want to actually see inside you have to go to the link below and there are 29 photos of the interior of the house.

For a peek inside go to this website. They did let you take photos of the views out the windows from the inside and also from the porches. I guess they cannot claim intellectual property rights on God's creations! For all the flak about it, there are tons of photos of all the past ones on Flickr. The big WHATEVER, right? Id' like it better if they just said, "No photography in the house please." Not complaining, just sayin'...

From the front side porch~ the Bay in all it splendor.

One of the pretty, manicured pathways.

Zooming in on the Palace of Fine Arts
from an upper window in the library.

The sun-kissed neighborhoods looking so pretty!
As the wind came up quite suddenly,
it whipped those sailboats about
as
they are scrambling for the safety of the shore.

Looks like they all made it in safely.
Check out those white caps
they are huge
I am a long ways away.
They would not usually even be visible at this range.
Alcatraz in the background.
(At least they had a nice view!)

How would you like this nice roof top garden?

The bigger view of the billion dollar vista.
It almost doesn't matter what you put in the room,
it cannot compete with the view.
Your eye will automatically go to
the light and beauty of it. It's like having
an involuntary focal point!"
The designer did try using a ginormous
painting in the living room to counter balance it
that you can see on the website linked above.
The windows won!

The Golden Gate near sundown.

For me the fun of this Showcase was just the event itself. The location, the ambiance, the thirty- something designers in their fancy attire, champagne flutes in hand strolling through, seeing their competitors and peers. Seeing friends mingling at their best, enjoying what they do and what they love. I enjoyed all the lighting fixtures, the wall and window treatments, the colors, the hardware and appliances in the kitchen the 'kitch' around the house as defined in the urban dictionary.

What did not appeal to me was the lack of flow between the various rooms as I had mentioned above. I also prefer the decor of a home to stay within the confines of the genre of the home. Not in a boring, sameness kind of way, but so there is no dissonance. As an example, African art does not really appeal to me in an Italian villa. But that is just me and my training and my personal taste. For what it was, the Showcasers did a fantastic job of showing what is new in the design world and what appeals to the up and comers.

After the show case we went to dinner here.

"Have Cake, Eat It!" Not the most
subtle way of getting your patrons to indulge.

Not that they need much prompting
after seeing this!

It was recommended by our "Woman About Town" Silva's Executive Assistant. It was very good, fun and a relaxing evening. And the dessert in this place is down right sinful. Jim and I split a Salty Carmel Chocolate Tart. It was small, made smaller by splitting but still not the best WW choice. But, sorry to say that did not stop me.

But the scale rewarded me today in spite of myself...adios 20 pounds. It really is more about great choices MOST of the time than about never having a little treat. Oh, and did I forget to mention the entree? Grilled halibut and veggies, delicious but a little on the hot and spicy side. Hope you enjoyed our Friday night out on the town as much as we did!

Well Would Ya Lookee Here!

My Aunt Grace, my father's sister
when she was 26.

Her Great, Great Niece, Hazie
(our granddaughter)

My sweet friend, Margaret in Edinburgh, was stumbling through my blog and found an old post about my Aunt Grace that I did when she died in September of 2008. She just happened to notice how much Hazie resembles Gracie from the little photo I have on the top of my sidebar! You can probably compare them the best in the same view she did.

Margaret, thank you! It would have gone unnoticed by me and I cannot believe the similarities, they share some DNA for sure. I cannot think of anyone I'd rather have her grow up to be like either. Aunt Grace was full of life, a spiritual giant, and a beautiful fun-loving person. She was bright and compassionate and didn't have an enemy in the world. She brought light where ever she went, just like Hazie! Oh, I am just so thrilled by your discovery! A million hugs and thanks!

So, For Today...Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Outside my window...It is not quite 7:00 pm and it is pitch black outside. We've been home for less than 24 hours and we had a fun vacation. I have such mixed feelings about being home. Of course it is always wonderful to return to your own home and throw the suitcases in the attack for awhile but I sure miss all the kids. I guess that is something that never goes away. It seems to be my reality anyway. But our own bed felt good last night and it was wonderful to get all the clothes out, laundered and put away where they belong.

I am thinking...about how tired I feel right now. I guess it is really 10:00 pm to my biological clock but I am thinking the tired is more just from all the running, all the excitement, and the let down of it all being over.

I am thankful for...safe travels, beautiful sights, wonderful memories, this time of life.

From the learning room...that trying to keep a proper perspective is very important as we go through life. We need to check our own realities sometimes. Most people have a tough time doing it. Perception is everything, we don't always see eye to eye but the other guy is always wrong...right?

I am reading...The Help, loving it.

I am wondering...How Hazie is doing. She was diagnosed with Asthma along with all her other things this past week. Poor kid! But the upside is the medicine for it is helping her breathe better.

I am hearing...Nothing gotta fix that...going to my iTunes file, I'll see what comes up...I've Got My Love To Keep me Warm, Billy Holiday. Ah, that's better!

Today if I could change one thing...The aging process, ugh! And a variety of things would burn calories.

I am quoting...Julie Beck, "It is not possible to make real changes all by ourselves. Our own willpower and our own good intentions are not enough. When we make mistakes and choose poorly, we must have the help of the Savior to get back on track. We partake of the Sacrament weekly to show our faith in His power to change us. We confess our sins and promise to forsake them."

I am going...to get a better, more balanced routine going now....Christmas is coming!

I am missing...the kids featured here http://grammaandyou.blogspot.com
Check it out I changed the formatting and there is a cute video of Laura's boys first up!

One of my guilty pleasures.....jewelry shopping with Laura, we have so much fun. Found a really fun place in Newport called Bedazzled, we stopp
ed in one last time on the way to the airport. We didn't buy too many things! I did buy a few cool earrings on the trip and a great picture of a Vermont farm in the autumn that I love. Will get it framed in the next month or so. It belongs in our bedroom.

Pet Peeves...
wet counters in public bathrooms. Seriously have you ever seen a clean, dry one you could set something down on for a minute??

One of my favorite things...turning the gas fireplaces on in the chilly mornings. There is nothing like a fireplace in the kitchen on a cold morning.

An enjoyable movie I have watched lately...Leap Year with Laura.

I am curious about...
how different life must be in the New England states. It is such a homogeneous environment and seems to be grounded in common values. I am wondering what it would be like to be a student at Yale, my 2nd favorite Y.

A few plans for the rest of the week...just getting back to normal and getting reorganized, trimming back some dead looking plants, getting back on a regular eating, sleeping and exercising plan, seeing my manicurist, needing a haircut. Friday I hope to see my Friday morning group (use to be Monday) and then going to a play on Friday night with friends. I also have a billion photos to go through and some posts on each of the states we visited to do. Visiting and teaching and church work is waiting too. Got the shopping done and soup made today so that that helped get us going on a less caloric diet! I have so many blogs friends to visit this week too. Looking forward to catching up with you all.

Here is a photo and thought I am sharing with you....

Rhode Island is just about at its peek right now. This was taken from the window of the car on the way to the airport yesterday. I am so happy as Robert's parents are coming to visit them on Thursday and I wanted them to be able to see the foliage. They are the reasonable in-laws, staying four days instead of three weeks! You know us, we don't do anything half-way. How embarrassing! Yikes!

It Took Our Breath Away

This might be one of the most incredibly beautiful and special places in the world. When we turned the corner in Sharon, Vermont and saw this road we were all fell silent. We were completely speechless.

This canopied lane leads to the Monument built to commerate the birthplace of the prophet of the Restoration, Joseph Smith, Jr. I want to tell you all about it and share more pictures but time does not permit. So for now, here is my favorite photo from our trip so far.

Through the Roof Photos!

I bet when you saw the title of this post you thought I was going to brag about some fab photography, didn't ya? Well, no I wouldn't do that! These are some photos I took through the sunroof one afternoon in New Hampshire while the family was in a pharmacy picking up on-the-go H2O.

I just happened to look up and these clouds were moving so fast and it was a spectacular show. My eyes have been devouring eye candy continuously for days on end. I am feeling euphoric over the beautiful creations of our Heavenly Father. I am so thankful for His gorgeous handiwork at every turn.

The sky was so blue, the lighting so perfect,
no editing necessary!

Laura's Photo Blog

Our daughter, Laura, doesn't have a lot of time for blogging but she does have a wonderful photo blog that I should have featured long ago. She started it in Italy so there are some fun shots there and now she is continuing it in Rhode Island. She tries for a photo of daily life, one for each day. Check it out, it is fun and a quick read.

My Girl!

Hope your day is going well. I am cleaning, changing sheets, dusting vacuuming...what is there to say about that? Jim is working on Jeff Adam's School Board campaign. Just an ordinary day over here! I hope you are doing something fun!

Geraniums in Cement

I saw this fun photo on this new blog I am really enjoying about the city of Edinburgh. Margaret said that this photo has apparently been floating around the Internet but I had not seen and just love it. I am not sure where this photo was taken.

I and adore this picture!

This just says so much to me about women and how we love flowers and how we create good environments to lift our spirits even when surround by cement. I just love these little old ladies amidst their beloved geraniums, whomever they are. It makes me long for Europe and the simple pleasures of life. It speaks volumes about finding joy in just simply being a woman. We all love beauty and the joy of friends gathering together to chat about the day. Although you cannot enlarge it I bet that if we could do a close-up examination of the photo...they are wearing 'sensible shoes.' Don't you think? European women are so amazing! They seem to know how to just BE! I find it pretty refreshing actually!

We have a particular love for Edinburgh because our daughter was a missionary there, and then returned to live there with her husband, Lowell, and also become a mother. Little Piper was born in Scotland so we have made a few trips to Edinburgh. We would love to serve a mission there someday if we could choose. You should check out Margaret's view of of Edinburgh @ the link posted above. It is great! What a beautiful and exciting city!

Fun With Photos

Through Faye's blog I have discovered a new and very fun site that I wanted to share. Picnik is a free photo editing sight that is very easy to navigate and I can see all kinds of creative possibilities. I just fooled around with it for a couple of minutes and embellished these photos just for the learning. Aren't they cute? Now I know I really will not be doing any real life scrapbooking~too time consuming and expensive!

Loving the Internet,
