Twin Brothers of Different Mothers

flickr

As you know I often write about the earth defying differences between men and women. This is one of those posts. It is about a couple of apples giggling over a couple of oranges.

Last week I got an email with photos in it from Lee. Dave and Jim have been working for months on building Dave a very nice workshop in his backyard. They have spent nearly every Wednesday night and Saturday together building, hanging windows, doing the electrical, wallboard, etc. and loving every minute of it. So last week it was finally time to paint.

Yep, this is the get-up they wore to paint the shop. Huh? As I looked through these photos, I bit down on my lips really hard so I wouldn't laugh, then I just started to giggle and then I just kinda lost it altogether.

I love these two with all my heart and soul, but they can be just a tad bit weird ah, different from time to time. This is one of their escapades that really tickled me. In the middle of that night I woke up and all these funny thoughts were going through my head to caption these photos. I had to get up and write them down. So, here we go......

"Overkill? Are you kidding me,
some people just don't get it, my Brother!"

"Hey man, do you think these come in different colors?"

She said, "You spent your hard earned money on that?"
He said, "Oh no, I've had it!"
She said, " Ooooh, (she winks)
somehow that one slipped by me in the wash!"

Speaking of wash...
"Dave, what laundry detergent do you use?
My suit looks pretty dingy and grimy next to yours."
I hate it when your stuff is better than my stuff!"

"Jim, I cannot believe your rubber bands do not even match!"
"Yeah, and we all know who will have something to say about that!"

"Ya know, these are not quite as {{hot}} as our
matching biking outfits
but they are bound to turn a few heads!"

"Spare the outfit, spoil the fun!"

"OH NO!!"

" Whatup, Bro? "

"My nose itches and I really gotta GO!"

Lee will kill me if I traipse through the house!
Next we gotta plant some mature, tall, bushy bushes."

"We're almost ready,
the moment we've been
working up to for months!
Outfits on....check.
Compressor ready....check.
Paint ready.....
OK, plugger in!"

"One thing is for sure, Dave,
it doesn't get any better than this!"

No kidding, man!"

"What on earth? You cannot be serious...it is dribbling outta here."

" (BLANKITY BLANK BLANK!!) Times 2."

Short of sponge painting..."What are we going to do?"

" Hmmmmm, Hey, Dave?"

" Yeah?"

"Got any brushes and rollers?"

" Heck no, we've come this far and
invested this much, let's just fix it!"

"OK, makes perfect sense to me."

I don't think baptizing the part in
paint was part of the plan!

Hours pass...finally done.

She said, "Glad to see you re-purposed
the Walmart bags as shoe covers,
two less things to 'air out' at home!"

"There isn't anything we can't fix, Dave."

" No kiddin'! We are builder rock stars!"

"There is just one thing that baffles me....

Now I have hazmat head,

paint somehow slipped under my mask
and goggles and glasses!

I have paint on the bridge of my nose and
my five o'clock shadow is snow white.

And the real killer, I got PAINT on my best shirt!
I've babied it since college,
I'll never find another swine colored shirt again!
Dang!"

" The only thing is, this sure did beat the old,
tiresome brush and roller way."

"Amen, to that my Brother!"

The Apples said, "Don't worry Oranges..
Latex is water soluble!"

We you guys,
you make life interesting
and you get the jobs done.
Yay for you!

OH AND YOU MAKE US LAUGH!

John Adams

I have been watching the HBO mini-series, John Adams. I think it is quite well done and although a little dry is some places, I did wake up this morning thinking about the powdered wig. I was just wondering if there is a woman alive today that finds these attractive in anyway? Seriously what on earth possessed them to think those things looked good? I looked it up on Google and learned a few things about the wigs, which quite frankly, I had never given much thought to until now.

"Powdered wigs were an integral part of high fashion for both men and women during the 18th century. Sometimes employed as part of formal accessorizing for both social events and for public appearances, the powdered wig sported an elaborate design of curls and waves that was topped off with a dousing of white powder. While the use of the powdered wig declined drastically by 1800, limited use of the device remained in some countries around the world, notably as part of proper attire for barristers and members of Parliament in the United Kingdom.

The process for creating a powdered wig often involved the use of frames. The basic materials normally included horsehair and various binding agents. The horsehair would be arranged and set into place into a finished product that would remain in place even in a strong wind. To complete the basic look, powder that was specially developed would be applied liberally to what was essentially a helmet made of horsehair.

In actual design, the style for the powdered wig often related to gender, purpose, and social standing. White wigs for women in high society were often high piles of curls that were enhanced with elements such as bows, garlands of flowers and even feathers. These types of wigs were considered ideal for presentation at a royal court, attendance at a formal ball, and other key social situations.

By contrast, a powdered wig for a man would often be a simple design. For use in social situations, the wig would feature a design that was relatively close to the scalp and the shape of the skull, with a minimum of curls. A small amount of curl normally extended at the nape of the neck and was tied with a simple black ribbon. As with the more elaborate wigs designed for women, this simplistic design for the well dress male would be liberally powdered to achieve a white or near white appearance.

The powdered wig designed for use in the courtroom was more elaborate. Wigs worn by barristers and sometimes judges would involve rows of curls that covered the head and sometimes hung to a length around the top of the shoulders. A wig of similar design became common in government settings as well, and remains popular in some countries today.

Wig makers of the period could spend weeks or even months designing a powdered wig. Under certain conditions, a wig could become infested during the preparation. When an infestation occurred, the powdered horsehair would have to be cleaned thoroughly in order to remove the vermin."

Ewww! Is all I can say. I think fashions for men today can tend to be a bit boring at times but better that than the fancy knee highs, the bouffant satin pedal pushers, the waistcoats with tails and the ruffled white shirts. I cannot imagine my man in any of those, can you? He would not be happy or a camper...that is for sure.

And there you have it...I am back with a history lesson for you to ponder upon today. What do you think of men's fashions today and if you are a man, can you envision yourself being taken seriously in a powdered wig? Men's suits I will have to say have not changed much at all over my life time. And I think most men look great in them...or is that just something we are use to after this many decades? Maybe a little variety in colors, textures and prints might be fun? As for Jim I know he'd still choose a black, gray or brown suit, a white button-down shirt ( no ruffles, thank you very much), dark shoes and socks. I guess the only hope here is a fancy tie! One thing is for sure...no matter what happens to his hair, there will be no powdered wigs and no ribbons, no fancy buckles on his shoes, and no gold braided trim anywhere on the outfit. And I, for one, am just fine with that.

Dr. Franklin

It was fun to note that even back then they had their rebels. Good ole Ben Franklin sat around with his naked head on top and the gray, fringed, long hair around the periphery. There are always a few that refuse to play by the rules and there is nothing new under the sun, as they say. At least he didn't attempt the comb over.

Next Season's Dancing with the Stars?

I really like the idea of finding a caption for these funny political photos. Does anyone want to take a crack at this one? And while you are at it don't forget the Obama/Mc Cain one from a few days ago. I will give a prize for each one. Let's have a little fun~we need it at times like these! You all like prizes don't you? Don't feel obligated to take a prize if you win...it is not mandatory or anything!

Caption Anyone?

This is one of those moments that the press loves! Only someone with a history like me of what I pray are rotten photos of myself...can fully appreciate it! I am feeling Mc Cain~Pain here! Anyone care to come up with a caption? If there are at least ten comments I will turn it into a contest. Thanks Jen for letting me use it. Too sad and funny! The Name Game...Bon Bon Moe Mon Bonana Fanna...Foe Fawn, Fee Fi Foe Mon~Bon!

Oddly, I have a definite thing about what people call me....

It is not that I am in love with my name, Bonnie, in fact, I have never really liked it very much. I use to detest my middle name, Jo, because I thought it sounded too hillbilly-ish. Now I feel better about it because it was my sweet mom's nickname, Jo~ for Josephine and thank the good Lord, I didn't get Josephine for my middle name! Also, I kind of like it more now too because it is our granddaughter's middle name as well.

I don't like the nicknames my Dad use to call me on occasion...Powerful Katrina and The Bomber. Hello, let's make your daughter feel like a Mac Truck and not the lovely feminine little girl she might have been! My brothers called me Einnob, my name spelled backwards and did also pick up on Bomber too. Geesh.

Fortunately, my friends never tagged me with anything that made me seek therapy, but Jim has had a few I find interesting. He use to call me Tiger??? Huh? And he still calls me "Little Pie! " That is a laugh on many levels, but I am kind of use to it. I absolutely Hate it when he calls me tootsie or toots! I think after many agitated reminders, I have broken him of that habit. I have never liked it when he calls me Bonnie and never, Bonnie Jo, when he is talking directly to me. I can really only take that from our friend, Paul, in Scotland, it just works better with his accent. I like it best when Jim calls me, Bon, Honey, or some other term of endearment.

I don't like it when my kids call me Bonnie, nor my grandkids~definitely not! I don't like being referred to as a mother-in-law either. But I don't mind at all if my children's spouses call me Bonnie and I would like it even better if they called me Mom or Gramma.

I have never cared for Mrs. M (last name) or Ms M...the first is my mother-in-law and the second is someone I have never met or possibly, Bette Midler. The Mrs. is too old sounding and the Ms is too cheeky. I also do not care for Sister M (last name) very much although I know it is a sign of respect. It is OK but, to me again sounds stuffy and creates a distance. Some people call me Bonbon and I kind of like that even though it reminds me of a big lump of chocolate covered ice cream and some lazy woman lying around eating them and watching soaps. But my sister-in-law, Marilyn, calls me that and it is just great coming from her?? And I love it when my grandkids call me Gramma Bonbon! I'm weird! Kill me!

So now that you have no idea whatsoever what t o call me...I guess I like Bon best. Bon to me sound more intimate like you know me and even like me. Of course, Bonnie is fine too, as long as you are not an offspring. I know my friend, Con, understands this as she feels the same way I do about shortening Connie to Con and Bonnie to Bon. We are most happy when we do that for each other and are like two grinning peas in a pod.

Wow, it took me a lot of years to develop all this and just today I figured it all out. I think the things a person calls you and how they say it holds some real messages, don't you? Or am I just being totally wacked out again? What do you like to be called and why? Another weird thing about me is that I have never been able to say what I would like to have been named if I had a choice. Nothing else sounds right...hmmmm! OK, then that is my twittering for the day! By the way I will always answer to "Hey You"..if this is all too confusing for the sane among you!

Funnies From Italy

A few days ago Laura posted this great piece on Rossie. I plan to have my blog printed at the end of the year and wanted this post included because it is one of my favorites and it is 100% Ross. So here you have it, by my guest blogger and daughter, Miss Laura!

Better Than a Complaint
August 2008

"Last night I tried a new recipe for dinner (it was awesome- blog worthy in every way). Robert and I and Spencer really enjoyed it BUT Ross wasn't terribly impressed. In fact, he started complaining about it. In response Robert said (our favorite thing to say when the kids complain), "Ross, if you want to make a complaint, it must be submitted in writing." After leaving the table Ross found a piece of paper and a pen and wrote the following:

Dinners

1. Caisudyas!!! (quesidillas)
2. Ryfride byns!! (refried beans)
3. Wofls and Pancakes!! (waffles and pancakes)
4. Corn!

Dizerts
1. icecrym (ice cream)
2. fugscls (fudgesicles)

I guess he decided a list of suggestions for dinner and dessert would be better than a complaint. I swear, I love this kid- he is SO funny!"

(Ross starts first grade this month and he already gets phonics pretty well.)

Mr. Ballerina

Mike, this one is especially for you! Since you enjoyed the pirate hat photo of Jim I thought I'd start your day with a chuckle with this photo!

Jim in a tutu!

The many faces of Mr. Jim. One day a magician came out to the ranch and put on a show. He asked Jim to be his helper. Before he knew what was happening James had donned a tutu and was dancing around. Fortunately, someone had a camera as this will never happen again in a million and one years! You can imagine the boys were over the top on this one! This has been hanging on Jim's magnet board in his office here at home ever since. I am hoping it will engender in him a love of dancing which he has never had!

Lookin' good though, Jimbob, a nice accessory to your uniform! It is great for that authoritative imagine you are projecting. It makes you look so tough and foreboding. Actually it is scaring a lot of us ~big time! Oh my gosh, I just noticed for the first time that guy is holding your hand! Holy Cow!

About This Nightmare I Had...

Every week for the past five or more years I have been meeting with dear friends once a week at 8:00 am sharp for some weight loss chatter and other girl time therapy in general. Well, the weight loss thing has been precarious at best, but the girl talk has saved my sanity more than once.

Every morning during the week I get up around 4:15 ~4:30 am with Jim, make his lunch, sit with him while he eats breakfast and we read scriptures together. I drag my rear out of bed, but he is so chipper and ready for the day that he throws all the doors and windows open to get the cool (still night time) air in the house, like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. Usually after he leaves I am wide awake so that is when I do a lot of my blogging. What the heck else is there to do at that time in the morning? This morning I was going in to make our bed and it was still dark and cold in the house and I took one look at the bed and thought...Hmmm, I'll just lie down for a minute or two and then I'll get up and get ready for my friends to come over.

Here is the account of what happened next from Connie's point of view. Her E-mail reads:

One of my Peeps

"Okay, I'm not going to forget this morning for quite some time.....If ever. :) First of all, it began on such a note of relaxed delight. Lanette and I chatting and happy on the doorstep. Then 2 rings of the bell without any response from within. Hmm. The van is in the driveway. The blinds in the bedroom are still closed. Hmmm. Concern, small but prickly, begins to surface. We walk around the side of the house. Oh, the blinds to the bedroom are open on this side.

And...My Other Peeper!

Lanette kind of halfheartedly leans in for a look. Then another look. I take a peek. We see the blanket encased shape of our dear friend. Hmmmmmm. The blanket is not breathing. Not even a little. That little prickly feeling becomes icky and bad. And bigger. Much, much bigger. So big that Lanette cannot simply try a friendly little tap on the window to test the Sleeping Beauty waters. Oh, no. She goes for the scared-friend stoccato bang Bang BANG. And that, my friend, is when we knew you were totally and perfectly okay. :) That was as impressive a resurrection as I have ever seen. I can only imagine that you're adrenaline was immediately on par with ours. Thank goodness Lanette softened it and soothed you by yelling through the window that we had thought you were dead. Not, 'We were in the neighborhood, there was a small, innocous bug on your window and we went to swat it away, inadvertantly tapping your window' etc., etc., Oh, no. She thought it better to holler that we had, in very deed, thought you were dead. I'm sure you just did what we told you at that point, "Go back to sleep, Bon!" Yes, I'm sure that you were relieved to know it was just us banging away on your window, screaming things about death, and leaving you to deal with your own adrenaline. We just didn't want to be the only ones walking away on shaky legs, I guess. Boy, what a relief. Good thing you were okay. We just could not imagine anything worse--oh, that is until Lanette said it would have been worse to find you bloody and bludgeoned. She has a point there.

Well, I just wanted you to know the whole story from our perspective. Oh my, I have been laughing about this all day long. What a way to start the day. I have learned a thing or two from this:

1) always sleep with my blinds tightly closed
2) if I do die in my sleep, first reach up and open the blinds
3) never be bludgeoned and bloody in front of my friends
4) if I wrap myself tightly in a blanket to sleep, make sure it still looks like I'm breathing
5) if I cannot follow the above principles, I may want to choose less invasive friends.
I guess it's true what they say--Friends don't let friends sleep in....Or something like that. :) Gosh, I just love you guys! We now have a new bond that will last throughout eternity.
You are all the BEST!!!!"

Here is what I think happened from my perspective: I had my first old lady experience with someone thinking...oh my gosh, where is she...she must be dead...let's go check! I had my first experience (hopefully) with peepers! I am thankful I was wearing my best nightgown and not just my undies, and I am glad the window was shut because I was probably snoring like a truck driver! But then they would have known I was still alive and probably wouldn't have scared the 'you know what' outta me. They were laughing so hard and I know it will be a long long time before I live this one down. And the lesson I learned is that is it is always the night, once a decade, when you forget to close your blinds that something like this happens~count on it! I am glad it was these Peeping Tommies and not someone else like the EMT squad! For that they would be dead meat! No Kidding! It is nice to be loved, however, some old ladies could lie there for a week before anyone noticed they were gone. Geesh though, a girl can't get away with anything anymore!

Too Much Bull!

I am over here chuckling to myself about the decorating project I am working on this week. Sometimes the design plan comes as a big challenge, other times...not so much! This room is the latter. Take the bull by the horns and say, "Adios!!" 'Steer' clear of this idea~even adding flowers and greens doesn't cut it!

What's Up With The Winkee?

From Simply Stated
Accessories | Lingerie | Time-Saving Solutions
Multiply Your Wardrobe With A Winkee

"I am so impressed with the Winkee ($15-$16 at TheWinkee.com), because it offers a solution to one of the eternal challenges of summer: dressing modestly enough for work and other daytime activities without piling on the layers and inviting all those meticulously chosen clothes to become a sweaty disaster. For low-cut tops that usually require camisoles (or banishment to the “maybe some day” part of your closet), the Winkee is just perfect.

Winkee

Here’s how it works:Position the triangle part of the Winkee in the middle of your bra. Fasten the longer pieces of fabric onto bra straps with the included stickers (“Winkeedots”), and you're sporting an instantly higher neckline; no bunching, no extra layers."

I was doing fine with this until I came to the highlighted
part of the next paragraph.

"And if your top isn’t objectively too low-cut just too low-cut for, say, a board meeting - you can easily duck off to the ladies’ room and un-stick your Winkee before dinner. When folded up, it’s smaller than a running sock."

For some reason this struck me as silly and sad.Why does anyone think it is OK to be immodest over dinner? Says a lot about why people dress as they do. Fashion industry take note! Not every woman is into this notion of showing all to every Tom, Dick, and Harry, or Sue for that matter,
that comes along! We shouldn't be needing the Winkee
in the first place.

Going Green

I saw this article yesterday about getting the greenest grass possible. Organic grass would be great but today I think I saw something even more green in every respect. Does not require anything but big bucks!

Faux Grass, Anyone?

This is the lawn of the house we are staging tomorrow.

This does not require water, fertilizer, aerating , auto sprinkler system, nagging hubby to mow and edge, or paying the neighbor kid, no crab grass, no dandelions, no bees, no weekly maintenance hassles and no big brown spots.

Now I know some of you are saying but what about the fresh scent of cut grass, the grass between your toes and all that. I say, get some comfy slippers and light a grass scented candle. I don't plan to be frolicking in the grass any time soon so this grass is my idea of going green!

Actually we do not have a blade of grass on our property. If you are stuck with the real thing~check out the article above!

This is my 270th post since I began blogging in December 2007. I think it calls for a free give-away. I have no idea what it is yet but something fun for your house! Make a comment for a chance to win the mystery prize. I will draw the winner in one week. Go for it ladies!

The "E" Word

The Importance of Walking

"Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional five months in a nursing home at $7,000 plus per month. All this allows you to spend down your children's inheritance in the lap of luxury and leisure. My grandpa started walking five miles a day at 60. Now he is 97 years old and we don't know where he is. I really like long walks, especially when they are taken by people that annoy me. The only reason I would take up walking is to hear heavy breathing again. I have to walk early in the morning before my brain figures out what I am doing. I joined a health club last year and spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to actually go there for the benefits! The advantage of exercising daily is that when you die someone will pass by your coffin and say, "Wow, she looks good, doesn't she?" I know I got a lot of exercise these past few years just by getting over the hill. We all get a lot heavier as we get older because there is a lot more information in our heads and so much more love in our hearts." Author unknown.

OK, Lanette, I'm on it! But you better say I look good when you walk by my............OK, I'm out the door! I am committing to early mornings before it gets too hot ( and my brain won't know what I am doing.) Celebrating 30 years of no air-conditioning over here!

Pranks and Perspectives

I am feeling the need for a little fun so check this out!

I thought this was really clever!

This photo has nothing to do with anything on this post
...I just can't leave it plain..business is slow and I have
to decorate something!

I also thought this was interesting~

So, What's in a Billion?.......
The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a
casual manner, think about whether you want the
"politicians" spending your tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one
advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure
into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
D. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the
rate our government is spending it.

Weird/Funny Photos~Vote for Your Favorite

As I was looking through all the pictures of Italy there were some that were either funny, weird, or unusual so I wanted to just post some of them for fun.

Little Bo Peep and her Little Lost Sheep?

Yes, Rossie another train ride!

Munich Airport Restroom. Jim saw the fly and then realized it was tattooed into the porcelain. Every urinal had one. I have heard of weird places for tattoos but this beats all. Lowell, is this German humor? I am clueless.

Funny little car~no wonder they think we Americans are so
wasteful with our big gas guzzling SUVs, etc.

I thought these funny shaped trees @ Camp Darby looked like tilted umbrellas!

Weird modern sculpture of a skull made from large tin cans and old coffee pots, etc. This is found in Venice on the Grand Canal and seems entirely out of context??

Bride and Groom strolling along the Grand Canal in Venice.
Heading towards a romantic walk over Rialto Bridge.

This weird face on Ross appears to be for real. I wonder what is causing this expression? He looks like he is gagging and about to throw up??

Spencie's idea of funny! A deacon in training, no?

This bird has found his own personal throne!
I wonder how this poor dead guy would feel about that!
A strange choice for a bird brain but it does seem a little better than
some human choices we ran into and away from.

Yes, Missy, Shades of China!

Napping on the rocks in Chiavari

Rossie lost his jacket on the Vaporetto.
Grampa's vest will do.

My Latin Lover Boy!

Hi Spencer!

A decorator's nightmare~A little overkill on the rooftop of Saint Mark's in Venice.
Rick Steves calls it "Early Pillage"
They would steal relics from other cities and put them on the roof
so no one else could get them. Hello, on the church! Yeah!

Jim on the rocks~not a cocktail!

Like Father /Like Daughter
This girl is not going to feel the pea under her mattress, but she is a princess nonetheless!

We came to this rest stop out in the middle of nowhere and decided to eat our sack lunches here. We sat right by this full blown chapel for the weary traveler. Right next door is a very posh shoe store. Think~ the rest stops that we have ~with these two lovely additions for your spiritual and shopping convenience. With the bathroom they seem to have covered all the bases, I guess!

There is nothing so sweet as snuggle time with the kids
and reading a story together.
This is just great but I need an extra arm
to hold the book now! Wait a minute.....

Laura's supernumerary arm!
She conceals it well while out and about, don't you think?
